Cutting the Habit # 2

Part of the CUTTING THE HABIT series, this collage functions as both index and incision—bridging compulsive ritual with symbolic intervention through a repeated motif of cigarette packages arranged in a strict grid. Emerging at a liminal point between early readymade-based experimentation and the later dream-derived works of RENAISSANCE SHOW, the piece mirrors the artist’s psychic oscillation between self-awareness and self-erasure. The assemblage does not merely illustrate addiction; it anatomizes the mechanisms by which perception itself becomes habit—patterned, involuntary, and scaffolded by commodified stimuli. Through its restrained formalism and object-oriented semiotics, the work engages the philosophical tension between volition and automation, echoing Advaita Vedānta’s critique of the individuated self. By transforming mass-produced detritus into a metaphysical diagram of craving and cognition, Yip opens a metadiscourse on image culture’s role in shaping—indeed scripting—our orientation toward both reality and selfhood. The act of “cutting” becomes more than linguistic pun or therapeutic gesture; it operates as an ontological proposition—an attempt to sever the illusion of control from the illusion of separation.
